Football season is upon us, and for many fans, it’s a time of excitement, camaraderie, and, of course, spending. Whether you’re tailgating at the stadium or hosting a watch party at home, the costs can add up quickly. According to a recent survey by Experian, football fans are expected to spend an average of $743 on football-related expenses this season. At O1ne Mortgage, we understand the importance of managing your finances effectively, especially during such high-spending periods. In this article, we’ll explore the spending habits of football fans and offer tips on how to keep your finances in check.
Experian surveyed 847 Americans to understand their football-related spending habits. The survey revealed that most fans plan to spend about the same amount as they did last year, despite the rising costs of attending games and other related expenses. Interestingly, nearly a third of respondents (32%) said they would be spending less this season due to financial pressures such as inflation and high credit card interest rates.
For some fans, the love of the game comes at a high cost. About 21% of respondents anticipate overspending on football this year, with 12% likely to go into debt to finance their football activities. This highlights the need for effective financial management, especially during high-spending seasons.
Although overall inflation has subsided to 3.7% as of August 2023, the cost of attending sporting events has increased by 7.2% over the same period. This has led many fans to reconsider their spending habits. Most fans plan to watch more games at home to save money, while only 14% said rising costs wouldn’t affect their football-related spending.
Additionally, 30% of fans expect to cut back on attending live games, either by purchasing cheaper tickets or forgoing attendance altogether. This shift in spending habits can help fans save money and avoid going into debt.
